    Forschung

    Im allgemeinen wird die langfristige geologische Entwicklung terrestrischer (d.h. erdähnlicher) Planeten von sehr langsamen, gleichmäßigen Konvektionsströmungen des Gesteins in ihren Mänteln geprägt. Damit geht teilweise auch die meist recht gleichförmige Bildung von Schmelzen einher, die z.B. auf der Erde als vulkanische Aktivität sichtbar wird.
    Besonders in der frühen Geschichte des Sonnensystems sind die terrestrischen Planeten jedoch von sehr großen Meteoriteneinschlägen getroffen worden, die Einschlagsbecken von Hunderten oder sogar Tausenden Kilometern Durchmesser erzeugt haben. Obwohl solche Impakte auf geologischen Zeitskalen extrem kurze Ereignisse sind, können die größten von ihnen eine Wirkung entfalten, die durch die starre, kalte Außenhülle des Planeten bis in den konvektierenden Mantel reicht und dort die langfristigen Prozesse für Jahrmillionen beeinflusst. Eine der möglichen Folgen ist vermutlich eine vorübergehende starke Zunahme der Schmelzbildung im Mantel.
    In diesem Projekt werden die Wechselwirkungen von Impakten und Mantelkonvektion mittels numerischer Simulationsrechnungen untersucht. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit liegt dabei auf der Schmelzbildung durch Impakte sowie der damit verbundenen Ausgasung und Zufuhr von Volatilen (Wasser, Kohlendioxid) und den Folgewirkungen auf die Atmosphäre. Diese Prozesse werden v.a. am Beispiel von Mars und Venus untersucht.
