Research

My research is aimed at determining the origin, accretion, and early evolution of planets. Ultimately, I am perhaps most strongly driven by the fundamental question of what is required to build a terrestrial planet like the Earth. To understand this, we have to examine the events preceding the formation of planets, more than 4.5 billion years ago. As such, my research concentrates on quantifying processes that occurred during the earliest stages of solar system history. To this end, I measure small-scale isotopic variations in planetary materials, such as meteorites and lunar rocks, by utilizing isotope ratio mass spectrometry techniques. The study of isotopic signatures is currently especially exciting because, thanks to analytical advances, isotope ratios can now be determined with exceptional precision. By exploiting this in my research, I aim to establish a more accurate chronology of early solar system evolution. In particular, I have used isotope variations in planetary materials to constrain diverse aspects of early solar system history, including the:

  • Early evolution of the solar protoplanetary disk
  • Accretion, and core formation history of protoplanets
  • Genetics of planetary building blocks
  • Evolution of planets such as the Earth, Mars, and Jupiter
  • Origin and early evolution of the Moon.
