EDIT´s objective is to reduce the fragmentation in European taxonomy through increased cooperation and integration between the larger taxonomic research institutions. New ways of institutional collaboration and in particular the use of innovative working methods and the integration of taxonomic data and information through the internet (cybertaxonomy) are promoted.
Applying Taxonomy to Conservation
The aim of the EDIT Work Package 7 (WP7) "Applying Taxonomy to Conservation" is to strengthen the input of taxonomic expertise for biodiversity conservation, in particular for the recording and monitoring of biodiversity in protected areas. Hence, "All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory + Monitoring" (ATBI+M) programs have been set up in selected areas and WP7 organises and supports the participation of individual taxonomists and experts. These programs differ from similar, comparable projects in their long-term orientation, and in particular individual records are recorded precisely, geo-referenced and digital and data is managed in a sustainable manner.
Active European ATBI+M sites are located in Mercantour/Alpi Marittime National Park (France/Italy), in three National Parks in the Gemer area in Slovakia, and in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald (Germany). Since 2007 more than 11,000 species (>67,000 data sets) have been recorded and documented by more than 350 participating experts. All data from these EDIT's ATBI+M sites are accessible for free and available through our own portals (Mercantour/Alpi Marittime National Park, Gemer area, Biosphere Reserve Spreewald) and also world-wide through the "Global Biodiversity Information Facility" (GBIF).
