Impact and Meteorite Research

Collisions of cosmic bodies significantly influenced the origin and evolution of planet earth and life. Investigations of meteorites provide insights into the early history of our planetary system. Craters on earth and other planetary surfaces allow for the reconstruction of such cosmic bombardment and how it shaped the genesis and development of lithospheres, atmospheres and biospheres.

The analysis of sample materials provides insights into the physicochemical processes at impact. Laboratory experiments and numerical computer models give a deeper understanding of meteorite impacts and their environmental consequences.
To gain maximum knowledge and understanding, of these fundamental processes our teams link small- or micro-scale events (such as the shock modifications of minerals) with large-scale events (such as the formation of impact craters and basins).
