Avoiding infections: Learned strategies in animals and humans

bis

In order to be able to talk digitally about various topics related to parasites, the spread of pathogens, global health and our relationship with nature, we started with our event series on the 20th of April. We will address current issues relating to the coronavirus and the transmission from animals to humans. Every Monday we invite scientists to talk to us about their research and discuss our questions.

Our behaviour plays an important role in the prevention of infectious diseases, although the behaviour is not necessarily reflected. Some things are due to our evolution and our reactions are rather intuitive. In the animal kingdom, similar strategies can be observed to some extent. Overall, a balance must be maintained between the need to ward off infections on the one hand and the requirements, e.g. to allow proximity, on the other. Pathogens and parasites, for their part, have developed their own "behaviour" for this purpose. Luzie Verbeek from the Robert Koch-Institute would like to discuss with us how much our behaviour is influenced by infections and what strategies exist.
