Press release,

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin will take part in the international competition of the City Nature Challenge from Friday, 26 April to Monday, 29 April. All citizens of Berlin are invited to take part.

The City Nature Challenge is an international initiative to encourage people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities around the world. Where are the most observations made? In which city are the most species found? Which city has the most participants? Thousands of people all over the world go out at the same time and observe nature in their cities. Berlin is the only participating city in Germany. The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin calls on all citizens of Berlin to take part, to identify the street trees or birds and insects.

Observed species are identified and recorded using the free Naturblick app for Android and iOS developed by the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. Simple identification keys help to identify birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, trees, herbs and wildflowers. The app can automatically identify bird calls and photos of trees, herbs and wildflowers. The app also provides information about the species, confusion possibilities and other interesting facts. The app Naturblick is part of the project "Discovering urban nature". Financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the project uses new technologies to raise awareness of urban nature and to communicate environmental education digitally.

At the same time, workshops are also held on these days in which experts from our partner organisations work together with interested parties to identify species and record observation data. For example, there are workshops on bats and hedgehogs, or midnight tours to record the song of the nightingale.

The City Nature Challenge is organized by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. For more information on City Nature Challenge events and the Nature View app, visit:
