Mammalian skulls, deer and horned animals

Researchers use the collection of mammalian skulls, as well as those of deer and antlered animals, to identify species, trace evolution and investigate changes in biodiversity. Both exhibition halls bring this scientific work to life.

At the same time, we highlight that many of these objects were brought to Berlin during the German colonial era. The new exhibition in both galleries was developed in collaboration with co-curators from several African countries. This broadens the traditional scientific perspective on the objects to include stories about people, places and historical contexts, as well as questions of provenance, the colonial contexts in which they were acquired, and responsibility.  

The guided tour also addresses violence against people and animals, which is why we recommend a minimum age of 12.
