Help shape the future of water

Your contribution matters: we are gathering a range of views on water management in Berlin and Brandenburg and engaging in dialogue with decision-makers from politics and the public sector.
Water is a key issue for the future in Berlin: a growing population is leading to an increase in drinking water and wastewater volumes. At the same time, the climate crisis and the phase-out of coal mining pose major challenges for the water supply.
Political initiatives such as the joint ‘Capital Region Water Strategy 2050’ of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg are responding to these challenges. However, it is also clear that this can only be achieved in collaboration with the citizens of Berlin and Brandenburg.
Event programme:
Over three consecutive evenings, we will discuss key issues regarding the future of water in Berlin and Brandenburg. You will have the opportunity to actively contribute your own perspectives to the political process.
13 April 2026, Focus on challenges: How is the water situation in Brandenburg and Berlin changing due to climate change, the phase-out of coal and population growth? We will provide information on the basics and explain why political action and public participation are so important when it comes to water! With the support of Joyce-Ann Syhre (BUND Brandenburg).
4 May 2026, Your perspective matters: What concerns you about water? Where are you affected by changes in your everyday life? What can be done? We invite you to take photos or videos of things, places or events where you notice changes in the water situation in Berlin and Brandenburg, and to contribute these to a digital collection at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. The collection showcases and connects different opinions, interests and conflicts in Berlin and Brandenburg regarding regional water changes. In the workshop, we will discuss how you experience the changing water situation, using the collection contributions that you upload in advance to www.naturderdinge.de.
18 May 2026, discussion with decision-makers: On the third session, we will discuss the collected findings and perspectives together with representatives from research, politics and administration to shape a fair water future in Berlin and Brandenburg.
The workshop is taking place as part of the project “Wasserzukunft. Stimmen aus Berlin und Brandenburg” in partnership with the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment. Funded by the LOTTO Foundation Berlin.
