Get involved

All for nature – nature for all

We can only tackle the major challenges of our time by working together. Get involved – through voluntary work, the Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ), Citizen Science projects or by helping to develop exhibitions. Together, we can generate new knowledge and continue to develop the museum as an open space for research and society!

Citizen Science

Citizen Science invites anyone interested to play an active part in scientific research. Whether through observing nature, analysing data or sharing your own experiences – together with researchers, new insights into nature and the environment are gained.

At the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, there are many ways you can get involved, for example in the Wasserzukunft and Natur der Dinge projects, or via the Naturblick app.

Volunteering

Bring your experience, knowledge and curiosity to the research work at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin! Our collection of around 30 million objects offers a wide range of opportunities to volunteer – for example, in the digitisation or cataloguing collection items, as well as in transcription projects or data maintenance.

Through your involvement, you will support our researchers and help to further develop the collection as an open knowledge infrastructure for science and society. We regularly publish current opportunities to get involved on our page dedicated to engagement and volunteering. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at ehrenamt@mfn.berlin.

Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ)

A Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ) at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin offers young adults the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of working at a research museum and to actively contribute to its activities. In cooperation with the Vereinigung Junger Freiwilliger e. V. (VjF), we currently offer ten FÖJ placements in our research collection and in the Education and Outreach team.

In the collection, volunteers support tasks such as the cataloguing and digitisation of collection objects. In Education and Outreach, they assist with the museum's public microscopy centre, microscopy courses and school excursions, while contributing to a range of other educational programmes.

If you would like to experience the work of a research museum and help communicate science to diverse audiences, you can apply through the Vereinigung Junger Freiwilliger e. V. and select the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin as your preferred placement.
