Guided tours and other events for individuals can be found in the events calendar
Tips for group visits
We have put together some helpful tips and answers to frequently asked questions for your group visit to the museum.
At present, there is no charge if you need to cancel a booking. However, please do let us know in good time by email or phone, at the latest two days before the booked date. This will prevent one of our guides from travelling to the museum for nothing and incurring additional costs for the museum. It will also allow us to reallocate the slot.
Numerous groups visit the museum every day. Weekday mornings are particularly popular, and many educational programmes are booked up well in advance. If possible, please visit the museum with your group around midday or in the afternoon. Friday mornings are also generally not among the busiest times.
If you would like to visit the museum independently with a group or school class, you do not currently need to book in advance. However, we would appreciate it if you could let us know in advance so that we can be prepared for larger groups. You can let us know about your visit by email or phone.
For larger groups that are clearly identifiable as school classes, a school certificate is not currently required. A school certificate is required for groups of fewer than 10 people, as otherwise the ticket office staff cannot distinguish them from leisure groups and families. In general, we recommend a certificate for kindergarten groups and pre-school classes, as they are entitled to free admission.
You can help the pupils get in the right frame of mind for the visit by telling them what the visit will involve (e.g. a guided tour followed by a self-guided tour of the exhibition), asking them about their interests and preparing questions together with them. It is also helpful to give the children and young people some information about the museum’s exhibits in advance. You can find further information on the website. Please note that you are responsible for supervising the children and young people. Please remind the pupils to behave appropriately in the museum. This includes keeping the noise down and not eating in the exhibition rooms.
You can pay at the museum ticket office in cash, by debit card or by invoice. Please provide a billing address for this.
The meeting point is the information desk in the museum. You will be met there by a member of the museum’s educational team. Please be punctual and allow extra time for buying tickets, using the cloakroom and visiting the toilet.
If you have enough time, we recommend giving the children and young people the opportunity to explore the museum before or after the educational programme. Pupils often express a wish to do this when visiting museums. If the children and young people have a smartphone, they can use our digital audio guide. A map of the exhibition rooms is available free of charge at the information desk in the museum.
Breaks are important. If you have booked several guided tours or workshops, please ensure you allow enough time for breaks so that the events remain enjoyable for the children, young people and guides alike. Light snacks such as sandwiches, quiches and soups are available to purchase in the museum café. Children and young people may eat and drink their own food and drinks in the adjacent picnic area. In fine weather, you can also take a break outside in front of the museum and then return to visit the museum. Your coats, bags and rucksacks can be stored in the cloakroom in the basement of the building or in the group lockers in the café during your visit. Please speak to the staff at the information desk or the security staff.
