The collections are reference collections and can only be viewed on site. Access to the archive is by prior appointment only, to be arranged via email: archiv@mfn.berlin

Due to the museum’s ongoing development, there may be temporary restrictions on access. The image collections are currently unavailable and are expected to remain so until the fourth quarter of 2027.

Overview

The archive’s image collection brings together visual records from the fields of science, collecting and museum history. It documents research, expeditions and depictions of animals, as well as the people involved.

It includes, amongst other things:

  • Personal collections (B 001)
    • Image collections of individual researchers and collectors
    • Works by Ottomar Anschütz (1846–1907)
    • Collections by Wilhelm von Blandowski (1822–1878)
    • Watercolours by Anna Held (1859–1898)
    • Materials relating to Alfred Nehring (1845–1904)
    • Collections of Georg August Zenker (1855–1922)
  • Thematic collections (B 002)
    • Depictions of animals from various periods
    • Portraits of researchers and contemporaries

The image collections offer insights into scientific working methods, visual documentation and the history of natural history illustration.
