Third-Party Funded Project

Museum visitors’ nature connection

Researching connection to nature and developing a German-language survey instrument

Against the backdrop of global challenges such as biodiversity loss and climate change (BMUV, 2023), natural history museums are seen as playing a significant role as places where people can acquire, reflect on and discuss knowledge about nature and its future. But aren’t natural history museums visited mainly by people who are already feel connected to nature?

The objectives of the project are to examine the current state of research and theory on the concept of nature connection (CN) and related ideas, to review and evaluate existing CN instruments, to test selected items and subscales in a museum context with visitors aged 16 and over, and to assess the extent to which museum visitors already demonstrate CN and whether the instruments are suitable for the museum context. Recommendations are to be derived from this, and a CN instrument is to be developed for the German-speaking context.

Society and Nature

We study how knowledge about nature is generated, how it is utilised in society, and how science and society work together to develop solutions to environmental challenges.
