Dynamics of Nature
How does diversity arise – on Earth and beyond? In this area of research, we take an interdisciplinary approach to studying life: from the origins of our solar system to possible future scenarios. Our collection-based research brings together zoology, palaeontology and the earth sciences – and continually yields new insights into evolution, speciation and the dynamics of biological communities.
Collection Future
What will the collection of the future look like – and how can it reconnect knowledge? This research area is transforming the museum into an open knowledge infrastructure where objects, data and perspectives come together. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue with partners from academia, civil society and politics, new forms of research and knowledge transfer are emerging – with a focus on our shared responsibility for our natural and cultural heritage.
Society and Nature
How is knowledge about nature developed – and how does it influence society? This research area explores the interplay between science, the public and biodiversity. Through exhibitions, educational initiatives and dialogue-based formats, we create spaces for exchange and participation – both in person and online, locally and globally. In this way, we work together to develop new ways of understanding, communicating and putting knowledge into practice.
