Nature, culture and politics
Research
The Centre for Humanities of Nature explores the political, historical and cultural dimensions of nature. It brings together perspectives from the history of science, cultural studies, museum studies and the arts.
The aim is to critically reflect on the historical development of natural history museums and biodiversity research, to develop tools for analysing the interactions between nature, culture and politics, and to discuss and transform contemporary scientific and museum practices.
The Centre combines research with knowledge transfer and experiments with collaborative formats at the interface between science, society and museum practice. In doing so, it helps to open up the museum and its collection in an interdisciplinary and multi-perspective manner, to challenge dominant narratives and to integrate diverse forms of knowledge.

Key areas
Current research priorities include the colonial history of natural history collections and collection practices, as well as the broader political history of collections, exhibitions and museums.
Furthermore, the Centre is dedicated to developing new formats for collaborative knowledge practices and combines research with activities in the field of knowledge transfer. The aim is to make research into the relationships between nature, culture and politics productive and to open up new perspectives for natural history museums and biodiversity research.

Colonial contexts
The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is facing up to its historical responsibility and critically examining the history of its institution and collections. The development of natural history collections in Europe was closely linked to colonial expansion. Many objects found their way into the museum against a backdrop of power imbalances, scientific interests and economic exploitation. To this day, collection items from colonial contexts form an important basis for research, exhibitions and educational outreach.
The Museum has long been systematically investigating this history and also reflecting on current scientific practices, language and values. The focus is on colonial provenance, access to collection holdings and archival materials, and global cooperation. The aim is to further develop the collection to facilitate an open, international dialogue and to initiate processes of scientific and institutional transformation.
