Scientific Journals

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin publishes three international peer-reviewed journals. These are published as open access, cover key areas of the fields of paleontology, entomology and the life sciences.

Overview

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin publishes three scientific journals::

  • Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift,
  • Zoosystematics and Evolution (formerly Mitteilungen aus dem Zoologischen Museum Berlin) and
  • Fossil Record.

Each journal is published with two issues per year. The Museum bears the editorial responsibility and is owner of the titles from the beginning of the foundations in 1857 (DEZ), 1898 (ZSE) and 1998 (FR).

Since 2014, the three journals have been openly accessible and thus support the canon of free availability of knowledge and promote scientific exchange even more strongly. All three journals are published in English and offer print-on-demand. The publication costs (APC' s) are currently covered by the museum up to a certain limit. Please submit your manuscripts online at the homepages of the journals.

Fossil Record

Fossil Record is an internationally oriented, peer-reviewed journal of palaeontology. It publishes high-quality original research and provides space for extensive articles, including monographs. The journal is published in a large format and places particular emphasis on high-quality illustrations.

Scope

Fossil Record publishes articles from all areas of palaeontology, including the taxonomy and systematics of fossil organisms, biostratigraphy, palaeoecology and evolution. It covers invertebrates, microfossils, plants and vertebrates. There is a particular focus on object-based research as well as palaeobiological processes and patterns. Thematically coherent, comprehensive works are also welcome.

Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift

The Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift is one of the world’s longest-established entomological journals. Since its foundation, it has published research findings on insect systematics and made a significant contribution to the documentation of global biodiversity.

All manuscripts undergo an external peer-review process. A scientific advisory board ensures the quality and further development of the journal.

Scope

The journal publishes original papers on the systematics, taxonomy, comparative morphology and biogeography of insects. Other arthropod groups are considered provided they are relevant to entomological issues. Contributions from all regions of the world are welcome. Priority is given to revisions and broad-ranging studies with phylogenetic, biological or zoogeographical relevance. Review articles are also expressly encouraged.

Zoosystematics and Evolution

Zoosystematics and Evolution has a history stretching back over a century and today publishes international articles focusing on zoological systematics and evolutionary biology.

Scope

The journal is dedicated to the biology of whole organisms and publishes original research and review articles in the fields of taxonomy, biosystematics, evolution, morphology, developmental biology and biogeography of metazoans. Particular emphasis is placed on collection-based research, revisions, type catalogues, the history of science, and new methods in systematics. Contributions from related disciplines are considered provided they demonstrate clear systematic or evolutionary relevance.
