Transparent oversight and strategic guidance

Tasks

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is an internationally active research museum. Science, education and social dialogue require transparent and responsible oversight. This task is carried out by the Board of Trustees.

The Foundation Board is the museum’s highest governing body. It oversees all key scientific, programmatic and financial matters. In this way, it ensures that the museum fulfils its mission as a research museum serving science and society.

The Berlin Senate department responsible for the museum appoints the Board of Trustees. This task is currently carried out by the Senate Department for Science, Health and Care.

Composition

The Foundation Board consists of up to eleven members with voting rights:

  1. Chair: Senator of the State of Berlin responsible for science (with the right of representation)
  2. Deputy Chair: Representative of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR)
  3. President of Humboldt University of Berlin
  4. Up to eight public figures

These eight public figures are appointed to the Foundation Board by the Senate Administration for a term of four years; a single reappointment is possible. Membership of the Foundation Board is honorary.
