Museum management
Managing the museum strategically and sharing responsibility

Overview

As is customary within the Leibniz Association, the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is led by a Scientific Director and an Administrative Director. At the museum, these positions are known as Director General and Managing Director. Together, they form the museum’s management team.

The museum management creates the conditions necessary for the successful fulfilment of the institution’s mission. The scientific and administrative directors jointly assume responsibility for the strategic direction, further development and performance of the institution.

Areas of responsibility

  • Strategy development: The management shapes the museum’s future and develops a vision for its long-term development. The Director General is responsible for the museum’s academic objectives and works closely with the Managing Director to ensure the necessary resources and framework conditions are in place.
  • Academic positioning: The Director General positions the museum as an institution of excellence within its academic field. Through clear profiling, targeted communication strategies and close collaboration with partners and interested members of the public, he strengthens the museum’s significance and role.
  • Resource management: Responsible management of resources is crucial to the museum’s success and future viability. The Executive Director plans and manages the allocation of financial and human resources with foresight. Together, the Director General and the Executive Director prepare the museum for future developments.
  • Structure and organisation: A functioning structure and organisation form the basis for performance and innovative strength. The Director General and the Managing Director promote a culture of learning and innovation and actively shape change.
  • Staff development: The staff are at the heart of the museum. Their expertise, personal responsibility and motivation make a decisive contribution to its success. The Director General and the Managing Director therefore specifically promote the further development and potential of all employees.
  • Management and performance review: The museum management directs the institution’s work and regularly reviews its effectiveness. It adapts strategies and processes to enhance impact. A culture of transparency, openness and continuous improvement ensures the museum’s long-term performance.
