Exhibition-related interlibrary loans
Loans of collection items for exhibitions

(Kopie 1)

In addition to being used for research purposes, items from the collections of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin may also be loaned out on a temporary basis for public exhibitions. The aim is to place research objects in new contexts and make them accessible to a wider audience.

Loans are granted taking into account conservation, scientific and legal requirements.

Enquiry

An official loan request should be submitted in writing well in advance. Please send your request, together with a brief synopsis of the planned exhibition, to: leihverkehr.ausstellung@mfn.berlin

This address will put you in touch with the relevant staff members, who will liaise with the respective collection departments and review your request.

In the next stage of the process, you will complete a questionnaire regarding your loan request and submit it together with a current facility report or information about the exhibition venue.

Following a positive review, the museum will draw up a loan agreement. This sets out the conditions for the transport, presentation and handling of the objects. The borrowing institution undertakes to comply with these requirements and to ensure the objects are treated with due care.

Requirements and framework conditions

As a lending institution, the museum assesses each request on a case-by-case basis. Loan requests may be declined, particularly if:

  • the objects are too fragile,
  • there is an increased risk associated with transport or handling,
  • the objects are of particular scientific value or irreplaceable.

Collection items are not loaned for decorative purposes or as props for theatre, film, television or similar uses.

Loans are subject to the applicable legal provisions, in particular the Cultural Property Protection Act (KGSG) and international species protection regulations (CITES). Additional permits may be required for certain objects.

The objects remain the property of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and may not be passed on to third parties without consent.

Please note our loan conditions for exhibitions.
