Dynamics of Nature
How does life evolve? In this area of research, we use our collection to investigate how species arise and change, and how biodiversity evolves across space and time – from the formation of the solar system to the future.
Overview
In the ‘Dynamics of Nature’ science programme, we investigate biological, geological and planetary research questions through an interdisciplinary approach in collaboration with partners worldwide. This research is collection-based. The new scientific findings, in turn, help to develop our comprehensive research collection.
Researchers from zoology, palaeontology and the geosciences analyse the diversity of life on Earth. They investigate how populations differ, how new species develop and how body plans change over the course of evolution.
Our work spans the entire temporal dimension: from the formation of the Solar System through the present day to future scenarios. In doing so, we also investigate how biodiversity changes – that is, how communities of living organisms develop in space and time.
