Department

Evolutionary dynamics of diversity
The origins, evolution and future of biodiversity

Research

The department investigates how biological diversity arises, changes and responds to environmental conditions. The focus is on evolutionary processes such as adaptation, selection and the emergence of new species – from the Earth’s geological history to the present day. In doing so, our researchers bring together different disciplines and analyse biodiversity in the context of changing habitats and global environmental shifts.

The aim is to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of biodiversity and to establish the scientific foundations for its protection. This research helps to contextualise current challenges such as species loss and ecological changes, and to explain long-term developments in nature.
