I am researching the species diversity of pyralid moths (Pyraloidea) in Southeast Asia. I am particularly interested in the fundamental question: “How many species are found there?” Using an integrated protocol that combines genetic methods (DNA barcoding) with morphological characteristics, previously unknown species can be discovered and scientifically described. Another focus of my research is the evolutionary relationships within this superfamily, which are investigated using genome-wide analyses. These provide important insights into the evolution of the group’s ecology, morphology, and biogeography. In addition, I am the scientific director of the Lepidoptera and Trichoptera collection at the MfN, which comprises an estimated four million butterfly specimens.
