Ich habe Biologie (Diplom) an der Universität Tübingen studiert. Mein Hauptfach war Zoologie, Nebenfächer waren Botanik, Paläontologie und Parasitologie. Meine Diplomarbeit befasste sich mit der Biologie und dem Verhalten eines westafrikanischen Savannenfrosches. Für meine Promotion wechselte ich an den Lehrstuhl für Tierökologie und Tropenbiologie der Universität Würzburg. Dort untersuchte ich die Zusammensetzung von Ohrenquappen-Gemeinschaften in den nördlichen Savannen der Elfenbeinküste.
Anschließend verbrachte ich mehrere Jahre als Postdoktorand, zunächst an der Universität Mainz, wo ich die Auswirkungen der Abholzung auf Amphibien in Westafrika untersuchte, bevor ich an die Universität Würzburg zurückkehrte, um meine Habilitation abzuschließen und eine Interimsprofessur zu übernehmen.
Seit 2007 arbeite ich mit meinem Labor am Museum für Naturkunde Berlin und bin an der Humboldt-Universität habilitiert. Neben meinen Aufgaben als Kurator für Herpetologie leitete ich mehr als zehn Jahre lang die Abteilung Diversitätsdynamik und war viele Jahre als Ombudsmann für gute wissenschaftliche Praxis tätig. Seit sechs Jahren bin ich Mitglied des Auswahlkomitees „Zoologie” der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft.

Neben meinen üblichen Tätigkeiten als Forscher, Gutachter und Herausgeber für wissenschaftliche Zeitschriften, Förderinstitutionen und andere wissenschaftliche Akteure bin ich:
- Präsident der Nichtregierungsorganisation Frogs & Friends e.V.;
- Mitglied des Vorstands einer Initiative zur Zucht gefährdeter Arten in Gefangenschaft, die professionelle Institutionen mit Amateurexperten verbindet: Citizen Conservation;
- Vizepräsident für Feldherpetologie in der NGO Vipera e.V., einer NGO, die sich auf die Erforschung und den Schutz der Europäischen Kreuzotter konzentriert.
