Ich habe Biologie, Philosophie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte in Kiel und Göttingen studiert und arbeite seit vielen Jahren am Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. Ich war Mitbegründer des Zentrums für Integrative Biodiversitätsentdeckung am MfN. Seit 2020 bin ich zudem außerplanmäßiger Professor für Evolutionäre Systematik an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin. Neben meiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit über Insekten, besonders Hymenopteren (Bienen, Wespen, Ameisen), arbeite ich über die Theorie und Geschichte der Biologie und besonders über biologische Ordnungssysteme.
Ich trete regelmäßig mit verschiedenen Formaten in der Öffentlichkeit auf und schreibe populärwissenschaftliche Sachbücher. Zuletzt erschienen von mir 2022 „Expeditionen zu den Ersten ihrer Art – Außergewöhnliche Tiere und die Geschichte ihrer Entdeckung“ (DTV) und 2023 „Wespen – Ein Portrait“ (Matthes und Seitz Berlin).
