Ich erforsche die Artendiversität der Zünslerfalter (Pyraloidea) in Südostasien. Mich interessiert insbesondere die grundlegende Frage: „Wie viele Arten fliegen dort?“ Mithilfe eines integrativen Protokolls, das sowohl genetische Methoden (DNA-Barcoding) als auch morphologische Merkmale einbezieht, können bislang unbekannte Arten entdeckt und wissenschaftlich beschrieben werden. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt meiner Forschung sind die Evolutionsverwandtschaften innerhalb dieser Superfamilie, die mithilfe genomweiter Analysen untersucht werden. Diese liefern wichtige Erkenntnisse zur Evolution von Ökologie, Morphologie und Biogeografie der Gruppe. Darüber hinaus bin ich wissenschaftlicher Leiter der Lepidoptera und Trichoptera Sammlung am MfN, die schätzungsweise vier Millionen Falterexemplare umfasst.
