Experimental Interactions between Nature and Art
Over a period of four years, Berlin’s natural history museum hosted an international programme called “Art/Nature. Artistic Interventions at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin”. This project provided an experimental space for examining the interplay between contemporary art, museum practices, and natural history. Artists working in the fields of visual arts, sound art and literature explored the museum, its collections and its exhibitions. In the process they developed works that interpret the natural history museum from an artistic perspective and contribute to the debate on its social significance in the 21st century.
The book documents and reflects on the project, with its interventions by Saâdane Afif, Fernando Bryce, Mark Dion, A K Dolven, Assaf Gruber, Ulrike Haage & Mark Ravenhill, Klara Hobza, Elizabeth Price, Monika Rinck, Serotonin, and Sabine Scho & Andreas Töpfer.
It includes essays and commentary by the project’s curators Bergit Arends, Dorothée Brill, Gaby Hartel, Christine Heidemann and Cord Riechelmann, and by the museum scholars Peter Bartsch, Manuela Bauche, Oliver Colemann, Karl-Heinz Frommolt, Brandon Kilbourne, Carsten Lüter, Michael Ohl. The book was edited by Anita Hermannstädter, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin.
