Film and Photography

Zwei Besucherinnen fotografieren den Dinosaurier Brachiosaurus brancai

Generally, taking photos, including flash photography, and filming without a tripod, is permitted for non-commercial purposes. However, we would ask visitors to abide by the following rules:

  • Climbing on exhibits, benches or display cabinets is not allowed
  • Please do not get in the way of other visitors when taking photos or filming
  • Do not infringe on the rights of other visitors and of Museum staff when publishing your photos.

Further information and contacts for film and photography for non-private use are found below. We appreciate if contact is made in advance and are grateful for pointers to online articles as well as deposit copies of printed material that was created in the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin.

Film and Photography for Private Use

You are welcome to publish photos and videos of your visit on social media. We would be happy if you link or tag us in your posts (@mfnberlin on all channels).

We are also happy to receive references to articles on private blogs. Please send us an email to info@mfn.berlin with the appropriate link. If editorially possible, we occasionally share individual contributions on our own channels.

The museum's consent must be obtained for any commercial use or publication.

Photos for the Press and Professional Blogs

Film and photography without a tripod for day-to-day reporting is generally permitted outside the building and in the public exhibition spaces. A press ID will give you free entry to the Museum. You are also welcome to contact our press office before your visit if you have professional social media channels or blogs.

Film and photography without a press ID or requiring additional equipment (tripods, lighting, sound equipment etc.) always need authorisation. Similarly, film and photography in non-public areas and outside opening hours can only be permitted in agreement with all departments involved and the press office, logistics permitting. A location agreement must be signed.

Film and Photography for School, University or Art Projects

Visitor regulations apply to all such projects, stating that film and photography without a tripod are generally permitted outside the building and in the public exhibition areas. The use of any additional equipment (tripods, lighting, sound equipment etc.) always needs authorisation.

Similarly, film and photography in non-public areas and outside opening hours can only be permitted in agreement with all departments involved and the press office, logistics permitting. A location agreement must be signed.

Please let us know in advance if more than three people are involved in the project so that we can plan ahead and avoid logistical problems (high visitor numbers, other booked groups and guided tours).

Film and Photography for Commercial Purposes

Film and photography for commercial purposes (e.g. advertising, TV and cinema films, photos for magazines, photos of exhibitions and products intended for sale) always require permission.

The Museum für Naturkunde provides a selection of photographs with licensing that also allow commercial use on the Bildportal der Kultureinrichtungen (bpk). The files can be purchased and downloaded directly on the bpk portal
