  • Curriculum vitae

    Dr. Peter Bartsch

Dr. Peter Bartsch is curator of the fish collection the at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and commissioner of building. An ichthyologist, embryologist and comparative anatomist by training (University of Köln), he became curator at the MfN in the year 2000 – after serving the museum as research scientist for four years. His scientific interests focus on the ontogeny and phylogeny of basal groups of bony fish. His academic career includes the position of research assistant (University of Tübingen) and as a postdoc, he had a fellowship at the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm. At the MfN, P. Bartsch held the position of head of the department of collections 2010 to 2013 and has been in charge of the building program which included the reconstruction of the East Wing and its conversion into a modern storage space for the museum's wet collection, finished 2010. One of his current activities is leading the second phase of building restoration at the MfN, started in 2011 as well as being involved in the planning of the future development of the site.

  • Tasks

    • Curator of Ichthyology
    • Project Coordinator for Building

    Research

Main research interests focus on the evolution and systematics of the major clades of osteichthyan fishes, based on the morphology of fossil and Recent taxa and the structure and ontogeny of ancient vertebrate groups of the Recent fauna: function, early ontogenetic development, and reproductive biology.
General logistics, function and development of research collections form a more recent focus of work.
