    • Petropedetes natator complex & Conraua alleni complex (Michael Barej)
    • Amphibiengemeinschaften unter sich verändernden Umwelten - Im Weltnaturerbe Nimbaberge (Joseph Doumbia): untersucht Amphibiengemeinschaften entlang montaner Flüsse unter steigendem anthropogenen Druck (gesteigerte Landwirtschaft, steigende Bevölkerungszahl in der Region und Bergbau). Hierbei sind vor allem zeitliche Veränderungen und der Einfluss von Umweltbedingungen auf einzelne Arten aber auch auf die Gemeinschaftszusammensetzung von besonderem Interesse.
    • Anpassungskapazität ausgewählter Amphibienarten an den Klimawandel (Carolin Dittrich): untersucht mit Hilfe intensiver Literaturstudien, empirischen und experimentellen Felddaten, die Anpassungskapazität einheimischer Amphibien an mögliche Änderungen der Temperatur und der Wasserverfügbarkeit. Der Fokus liegt auf Transfer-Experimenten, in denen Eier der Gelbbauchunke (Bombina variegata) aus unterschiedlichen Habitaten ausgetauscht werden, um die Entwicklungsparameter vergleichend zu betrachten.     • Überleben in sich verändernden Umwelten – plastische Antworten oder genetische Stereotypien? – Studien an einer natürlichen Grasfroschpopulation (Rana temporaria) im Steigerwald (Bayern, Deutschland) (Franziska Grözinger): Beschäftigt sich mit dem adaptiven Potential einer natürlichen Grasfroschpopulation in Bayern. Hierbei untersucht sie, ob die die lokal auftretenden Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Entwicklung der Tiere auf das plastische Reaktionsvermögen dieser generalistischen Art auf verschiedene Umweltbedingungen zurückzuführen sind oder aber bereits auf kleinem Raum Anpassungsmechanismen (zB durch die Laichgewässerwahl) wirken, die zu einer genetische Spezialisierung auf bestimmte Gewässertypen führen...     • Lebenslaufstrategien und Aussterbewahrscheinlichkeiten in sich verändernden Umwelten - montane Amphibien in Kamerun als Modellsystem (Mareike Hirschfeld): Das Projekt befasst sich mit der Fragestellung, ob sich durch die Ausprägung bestimmter ökologischer Eigenschaften (bspw. Verbreitung, Reproduktionsmodus- und potential und trophische Nische) ein artspezifisches Anpassungsvermögen voraussagen lässt. In einem weiteren Schritt soll überprüft werden, ob es phylogenetisch unabhängige Eigenschaften gibt, die eine Anpassung an aktuelle und zukünftige Habitat- und Klimaveränderungen erleichtern bzw. einschränken.     • Einfluss von Matrixqualität in einer fragmentierten Landschaft am Beispiel einer hoch diversen Amphibiengemeinschaft in Madagaskar (Serge Ndriantsoa): untersucht, in wie weit sich verschiedene Vegetationsstrukturen in der Matrix (entwaldetes Land zwischen Waldfragmenten; hier: Reisfelder, Bananenplantagen und Sekundärvegetation) auf die Ausbreitung von Fröschen auswirken. Ziel dieser Studie ist die Identifizierung wichtiger Faktoren, welche die Struktur der Artengemeinschaft in stark fragmentierten Landschaften erklären.
    • Makroökologie westafrikanischer Amphibien (Johannes Penner): untersucht die Verbreitung der Amphibien und die Gründe hierfür. Die beobachteten Muster werden durch Ergebnisse fein aufgelöster Nischenmodellierungen erweitert. [Link]
    • Funktionelle Auswirkungen von Biodiversitätsverlust und Fragmentierung auf Ökosysteme am Beispiel einer hoch diversen Amphibiengemeinschaft in Madagaskar (Jana Riemann): untersucht den Einfluss von Waldfragmentierung auf Artenreichtum, Gemeinschaftszusammensetzung, funktionelle Diversität und die Position im Nahrungsnetz von Fröschen im Ranomafana National Park und seiner Umgebung. Ziel dieser Studie ist es zu klären, in wie weit lokale Aussterbeereignisse von funktionellen Eigenschaften der Arten, Veränderungen im Nahrungsnetz und phylogenetischer Distanz abhängen und in wie weit Muster der Amphibiendiversität auf fragmentierungsbedingten Habitateigenschaften wie Größe und Isolation beruhen.     • Leben auf Messerschneide? (Laura Sandberger): Die Nimbakröte Nimbaphrynoides occidentalis – das einzig wirklich lebendgebärende Amphib der Welt, ist endemisch für die Hochlandsavanne der Nimbaberge. Es wird untersucht, wie die zugrundeliegenden Parameter für die lückenhafte Verbreitung der Kröte in einem augenscheinlich homogenen Habitat verwantwortlich sind und wie die historische und rezente Vernetzung zwischen den Populationen und die Metapopulationsdynamik sich entwickelt und es wird beobachtet, wie die Häufigkeiten unter steigendem anthropogenem Druck sich verändert.     • Management Optionen für Amphibien unter dem Einfluss des Klimawandels (Nadine Zacharias): analysiert anhand von Literatur und aktuellen Studien innerhalb des Habit-Change Projektes, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Klimawandeleinflüsse, das Verhalten und die Habitatansprüche ausgewählter europäischer Amphibienarten. Anhand dieser Untersuchungen werden Vorschläge für ein angepasstes Schutzgebietsmanagement in Osteuropa entwickelt, die den, durch ein sich änderndes Klima bedingten, Stress für Amphibien reduzieren sollen.     • Amphibien Diversität und genetische Verbundenheit entlang eines Höhen- und Störungsgradienten am Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tansania) (Giulia Zancolli): die Arbeit zielt auf die Frage ab, wie die Landschaft die Amphibiendiversität auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen, Arten und Gene, beeinflusst. Erste Ergebnisse der Artenvielfalt und der Zusammensetzung der Gemeinschaften entlang des südlichen Hanges am Mt. Kilimanjaro werden mit denen anderer Berge Tansanias verglichen. Des Weiteren wird die Frage verfolgt, wie topographische Eigenschaften, z. Bsp. Höhe, Hangneigung, Vegetationstypen, die genetische Verbundenheit und Variation zweier Nicht-Modell Anurenarten (Gattung Amietia), die auf unterschiedlichen Höhen vorkommen, beeinflusst. Letzendlich werden die in die Adaptation involvierten Loci über einen Populationsgenomanalyse identifiziert. [Link]

    Das Hauptforschungsziel meiner Arbeitsgruppe besteht darin, die Reaktionen von Arten und Artengemeinschaften auf veränderte Umweltbedingungen wie Klimawandel oder Abholzung, nicht nachhaltige Nutzung natürlicher Ressourcen und Krankheiten zu verstehen. Meine wichtigsten, aber nicht ausschließlichen studierten Organismen sind Amphibien und Reptilien. Um eine solide Grundlage für alle unsere ökologischen und makroökologischen Forschungen zu haben, untersuche ich auch die Faunistik, Taxonomie und Phylo-Biogeographie von Arten, vor allem afrikanischer Arten. Wir wenden eine breites Spektrum von Methoden an, z. B. empirische und experimentelle Labor- und Feldstudien, Modellierung, morphologische, anatomische, genetische, bioakustische und biochemische Ansätze. Die Arbeitsgruppe setzt sich aus Bachelor-, Master- Student*innen und Doktoranden (und Post-Docs) aus der ganzen Welt zusammen, insbesondere auch aus den (tropischen) Ländern, in denen wir unsere Forschung betreiben. Damit wollen wir die Forschungskapazitäten in diesen Ländern stärken und wichtige Daten liefern, die dazu beitragen, das langfristige Überleben der von uns untersuchten Artenvielfalt zu sichern.

    • Langfristiges Projekt zur Populationsdynamik der lebendgebärenden Nimba-Kröte und der Flussamphibien auf dem Berg Nimba, Guinea (seit 2006)
    • Langfristige Reaktionen von Amphibiengemeinschaften auf Veränderungen in Regenwald- und Savannenlebensräumen (z. B. Tai-Nationalpark und Comoé-Nationalpark, Côte d'Ivoire; seit 1999 bzw. 1992)
    • Systematik, Taxonomie, Biogeographie und Makroökologie der afrikanischen Amphibien und Reptilien
    • Wiederherstellung des Nahrungsnetzes in einem ecuadorianischen Regenwald (Teil der DFG-Forschungsgruppe 5207)
