The MfN is one of the most important institutions for non-formal education in the fields of natural sciences, science education and lifelong learning within the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region. With its diverse educational programmes for children, young people and adults, the museum contributes significantly to the scientific literacy of society and ensures participation in culture, education and science for a heterogeneous audience, regardless of age, education, income and background. The development of educational programmes for new and existing exhibitions as well as within Berlin’s urban environment; the implementation of training courses for teachers, students and childcare workers; the management of educational programmes; the publication of educational materials; and the training and supervision of freelance museum guides are among the permanent tasks of the Education Department. In addition, the expertise of the staff also contributes to university teaching.
The department's research activities are application-orientated and form the basis of its educational work and strategic approach within the field of museum education and communication. More precisely, the educational and visitor research focuses on promoting scientific literacy and science learning in non-formal learning environments. Together with national and international partners at universities and research institutions, research projects are conducted on the topics of ‘nature connectedness and experiences of nature’, ‘interest, acceptance and knowledge of evolution’ and the ‘understanding of science’ of museum visitors and participants in citizen science projects.
