Evolution Fossils Ecosystem Mammals Press release, 01-07-2021 Earth-historical events such as ice ages or the shifting of continental plates are mainly responsible for the evolutionary success of proboscideans, but also for their decline. This is the main conclusion of a study published this week in Nature Ecology & Evolution by an international research team from Spain, Finland, Great Britain, Germany and Argentina with the participation of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin.

The first mammals were looking through the night - as revealed by visual pigment evolution
The origin of mammals, one of the most successful groups of living land vertebrates, took place at night. Researchers from the Museum of Natural History Berlin, Germany, and the University of Toronto, Canada, published this result in the journal Evolution

Dynamics of Nature
Dynamics of Nature In this Science Programme, scientific questions in the fields of biology, earth sciences and planetology are investigated interdisciplinarily, together with partners all over the world. This research is collection-based and the new scientific findings in turn help developing our extensive collection. Zoologists, palaeontologists and geoscientists discover and study the diversity of life on Earth, the mechanisms of population differentiation and speciation, the evolution of body plans and the diversity of organisms.

Berlin’s Brachiosaurus as an Object of Knowledge
Based at the Museum für Naturkunde, this sub-project deals with the Brachiosaurus brancai as an important first-hand scientific object of study, an emblem of prestige for the museum, and especially as a terrific opportunity to rehabilitate German paleontology as a biological discipline.

Evolutionary Diversity Dynamics
Evolutionary Diversity Dynamics We explore diversity changes in space and time. To do this, we investigate the entire spectrum of diversity from the molecular level to organisms, species communities, and ecosystems - from deep time to the present day. Moreover, we study the causes and consequences of diversity change and speciation. We employ a wide range of methods from anatomy, morphology, physiology, ecology, ethology, bioacoustics and genetics/genomics.
