The results of the City Nature Challenge 2024 in Berlin were impressive and show not only the great interest of Berliners in their urban nature, but also what is possible when major players from science and nature conservation work together in Berlin. In Germany, Berlin once again successfully took first place with 17,944 observations, 355 participants and 2,304 species. Our goal for participation in the City Nature Challenge 2025 is to top these results. We therefore invite all Berliners to discover and document their urban nature from 25-28 April 2025!
In 2024, Berlin took first place in Germany and was ranked 32nd in the world among the top 50 of 700 participating cities. Our goal for the City Nature Challenge 2025 is to get even more people excited about nature in their city and to achieve an even higher number of observations and species. The CNC is a global, friendly competition in which cities around the world engage in friendly competition to record as many wild animal, plant and fungal species as possible in urban areas.
Global cooperation for biodiversity
The City Nature Challenge is now in its tenth year worldwide and is making a decisive contribution to broadening our understanding of biodiversity. In 2024, around 700 cities took part with a total of 83,000 observers and recorded more than 2.4 million observations. The CNC shows what is possible when science, nature conservation organisations and the general public work together to protect urban nature.
‘The diversity of species discovered during the City Nature Challenge 2024 in Berlin impressively illustrates how rich in species our city is.’

Join in and discover!
In 2025, the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and numerous other Berlin institutions will once again be inviting people to take part in guided excursions, interactive events or to take part in the CNC individually. Whether on the balcony, in your own garden or on a Sunday stroll: every observation counts! These can be easily uploaded to the iNaturalist platform via photo or sound recording and thus made available to science. The iNaturalist app can be installed free of charge via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
