Project period: September 2023

The sustainable use of resources in agriculture, forestry and fisheries is crucial for environmental protection and food security. However, different views on the optimal use of the landscape can lead to conflicts. Constructive dialog is therefore necessary in order to find solutions that protect biodiversity and the landscape. How we shape our cultural landscape has a direct impact on climate protection, biodiversity and soil quality. It is becoming increasingly clear that we need to rethink our food system with regard to the ecosystem services provided by landscapes. With this in mind, we want to work together to find ways and develop strategies to make our landscape and food system fit for the future.

Dialogforum: Nachhaltige Landwirtschaft im Biosphärenreservat Flusslandschaft Elbe-Brandenburg (Sustainable Agriculture in the Elbe-Brandenburg River Landscape Biosphere Reserve)

11.09.2023, Burg Lenzen (Elbe) – At the dialog forum "Sustainable agriculture in the Elbe-Brandenburg River Landscape Biosphere Reserve - Food for thought, food for us, food for the biosphere" at Burg Lenzen, we received a variety of perspectives on traditional, sustainable and innovative forms of agriculture.

Initial keynote speeches by Bettina Kühnast (BUND), Laura Henningson (NABU) and Konstantin Kiprijanov (Museum für Naturkunde Berlin) introduced the topics of the Elbe-Brandenburg biosphere landscape, agriculture and nature conservation as well as planetary health.

During the subsequent excursion to the biosphere reserve, various experts presented a wide range of perspectives on the complex interrelationships between different forms of agriculture and nutrition. We would like to thank the experts for their diverse insights into the topics of hunting (Tim Taeger), fishing (Wolfgang Schröder), aquaponics (Christopher Shaw), bioeconomy and fermentation (Martin Reich), vegan nutrition (Johannes Stiegler), dyke relocation (Heiko Bölk) and extensive alluvial forest management (Jochen Purps and Martina Grade).

Last but not least, Kurt Holzkämper (MONAScollective) demonstrated how crucial it is to listen and react to each other by using microphones to make the voltage waves of a tree audible that we cannot hear.

Back at Lenzen Castle, the participants discussed the question of what opportunities and challenges arise for the various agricultural sectors in the Elbtalaue-Brandenburg region. They drew attention to shortcomings and considered initial solutions and possible collaborations.
