Tue | 12/15/2015 | 15:50 Tristan Otto Tristan Otto is the only original skeleton of a T. rex in Europe to date. The twelve- metre-long and four-metre-high deep black skeleton of the predatory dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous period was found in 2010 in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, USA. It is among the best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex specimens worldwide.

These include workshops, research, collections, exhibition and education department as well as administration. With joint forces and bags of enthusiasm, it took just 10 months to create a totally new exhibition featuring the new attraction Tristan Otto.

Tue | 12/15/2015 | 00:25 Keller’s Insect Models Insects are the most species-rich class of animals and make up three quarters of the biodiversity of our Earth. A look through the microscope reveals their richness of colour and shape. Preparator Alfred Keller, who built scientific models for the Museum für Naturkunde between 1930 and 1955, was fascinated by them. During his time at the Museum, he built many unique biological models. His detailed enlarged models of native insects set new standards in the art of museum model building.
Tue | 12/15/2015 | 00:24 Minerals Germany’s largest mineral collection in the Berlin Museum für Naturkunde contains approximately 200,000 specimens, representing 65 % of all known minerals. In the display collection, visitors can feast their eyes on 1,077 different mineral types. The foundation of the collection were the minerals and rocks of the Prussian King’s mineral collection of 1781. Some pieces were brought back from famous exhibitions, such as the precious stones Alexander von Humboldt brought from Russia.

The exhibition takes visitors on a voyage through space and time to the origins of the solar system. It allows insights into how, where and when matter emerged, which, ultimately, was the prerequisite for the evolution of the Earth and life on it.

Millions of preparations are kept in large storage rooms away from the public gaze. However, their significance as archives of life continues to grow. They provide important information for biodiversity and evolution research. 30 million specimens are stored in the Museums für Naturkunde in Berlin. A large proportion are preserved in the wet collection and are now accessible in one of the world’s most technically advanced collection buildings – the Wet Collection Wing.

Digital formats With the digital formats for kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools, students learn about scientific topics through everyday practical examples, in an artistic way and in relation to the reality of their own lives.
