Naturblick - Discovering Nature in the City

With our Naturblick smartphone app, you can digitally explore urban nature. Various features allow you to identify plants and animals even without prior knowledge and gain a better understanding of their urban habitats. The automatic image and sound recognition helps you identify species in your everyday surroundings. Additionally, you can explore nature’s diversity with identification guides for trees, birds, herbs, wildflowers, amphibians, mammals, butterflies, reptiles, bees, wasps, and many other species.

Take photos of plants and identify them using our automatic image recognition. Record bird songs and find out which bird is singing with the automatic sound recognition.

About Naturblick

In an interdisciplinary team, we develop and research digital tools that facilitate nature experiences in urban environments. This includes testing the use of pattern recognition for species identification. Our smartphone app, Naturblick, offers various features to explore urban nature and document personal observations. Additionally, the Naturblick-Website provides access to species profiles and open content, even without a smartphone.

Overview data collection

All data is collected for exclusively scientific purposes. As soon as the data is no longer required, it is deleted. The data that is collected and the extent to which it is collected may also be determined by technical requirements. When using this app, the following data is collected and stored anonymously in accordance with the GDPR

  • Sound and image recordings
  • Observation metadata (species name, geocoordinates, time, number, notes)
  • Crash reports (stack traces, type of crash, trends and version of the cell phone and software)
  • Device ID and metadata of the determination results (coordinates, time, determination history) 
  • anonymous usage data (information about your interactions with the app)
  • Event data (details of specific user actions such as clicking on buttons)
  • Device data (details about your device, including device type, operating system and screen resolution)
