Press release,

The Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science, a project of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin in the Public Engagement and Impact unit, has published its revised Public Engagement principles, which are aimed at experts, researchers and other interested parties. This is linked to the commitment to reflect on their own work and to create the conditions for all interested parties to participate in research.

Public Engagement describes the practice of exchange and dialogue between researchers and the public with the aim that science and society benefit from mutual exchange. In the newly revised version, the guidelines also focus on the values underlying the work, such as justice, diversity and inclusion. Public Engagement activities should be able to actively and continuously involve people in our society in research, regardless of their identity or background. The Code supports the establishment and professionalization of Public Engagement in Germany so that collaboration between the public and researchers becomes an integral part of the research process.

Background information

The Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science, based at the Museum für Naturkunde, creates incentives, opportunities and skills for collaboration between interest groups, the public and researchers at all career levels. In collaboration with Cyber Valley, a research consortium on artificial intelligence and various Public Engagement practitioners, the Public Engagement Code 2022 was developed after an open process lasting several years. The Public Engagement Code is constantly being developed and interested parties are welcome to help shape it.
