Dynamics of Nature
Dynamics of Nature In this Science Programme, scientific questions in the fields of biology, earth sciences and planetology are investigated interdisciplinarily, together with partners all over the world. This research is collection-based and the new scientific findings in turn help developing our extensive collection. Zoologists, palaeontologists and geoscientists discover and study the diversity of life on Earth, the mechanisms of population differentiation and speciation, the evolution of body plans and the diversity of organisms.

Berlin’s Brachiosaurus as an Object of Knowledge
Based at the Museum für Naturkunde, this sub-project deals with the Brachiosaurus brancai as an important first-hand scientific object of study, an emblem of prestige for the museum, and especially as a terrific opportunity to rehabilitate German paleontology as a biological discipline.

Evolutionary Diversity Dynamics
Evolutionary Diversity Dynamics We explore diversity changes in space and time. To do this, we investigate the entire spectrum of diversity from the molecular level to organisms, species communities, and ecosystems - from deep time to the present day. Moreover, we study the causes and consequences of diversity change and speciation. We employ a wide range of methods from anatomy, morphology, physiology, ecology, ethology, bioacoustics and genetics/genomics.

Palaeopathology
Many diseases also affect the bones. Palaeopathology is able to diagnose and interpret traces of disease on fossil skeletal material using medical methods and techniques.

Mini-algae influence the world climate
A new study led by Museum scientists suggests that global warming itself could cause many diatom species to go extinct, reducing ocean carbon removal and further enhancing global warming.

This discovery indicates that prerequisites of the mammalian way of walking and breathing were already present in some distantly related Permian ancestors.

The leaves of the Cretaceous
For a long time only comparatively few representatives of monocotyledonous plants from the Cretaceous period were known. A cabinet in Berlin contained new evidence of the earlier diversity.
