Mineralogy and Petrography Due to its history, the wealth of specimens and its scientific importance the Mineral Collection at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is one of the most significant in Europe. The Mineral Collection alone comprises 180,000 samples of approximately 3,000 minerals, which is about 60 percent of all known minerals. It is the largest and most diverse Mineral Collection in Germany and therefore comparable in significance to collections of other major natural history museums in Europe.

Recent Vertebrates
Recent Vertebrates These collections consist of specimens belonging to the clades of craniates and vertebrates. They are systematically arranged according to clades. Sub-collections that have been assigned their own curatorship include the clades of extant fishes, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals. The vertebrate collections also contain specialist collections focusing on developmental biology or domestic animals.

The Fossil Bird Collection comprises skeletal remains from the Upper Jurassic to the Pleistocene period. There are overall approximately 3,000 skeletal remains, including 11 types and 250 originals.

Fossil Reptiles and Tetrapod Ichnofossils
The collection of fossil reptiles comprises finds of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodile relatives, turtles, lizards and snake relatives, as well as marine reptiles and more basal reptiles. The collection contains over 18,000 specimens.

Recent and fossil plants The Palaeobotany Collections comprise over 230,000 single and collective items with more than 9,100 figured specimens and types. The collection covers the entire geological history of plants. Subcollections of the Cenophytic and Mesophytic eras comprising gymnosperms and angiosperms contain approximately 67,000 single and collective items from the Lower Jurassic to the Holocene. These include over 5,800 angiosperm and gymnosperm figured specimens and types. The sub-collections of the Palaeophytic period comprise approximately 120,000 items from the Precambrian to the Upper Perm periods.

The collection comprises 600 vertebrate species in over 3,000 ethanol jars as well as 80,000 histological preparations of vertebrate developmental stages, reproductive organs and related archive material.

Recent Invertebrates
Recent Invertebrates The zoological invertebrae collections are the most comprehensive collections at the Museum für Naturkunde. In total they comprise about 25 Million items of molluscs, such as snails and mussels, as well as cephalopods, corals, sponges, sea urchins, crustaceans, worm-like vermes, arachnids and insects. The entomological collections are the most extensive collections with more than 15 million items.
